The Zoning Board of Appeals and the office of the Zoning Administrator commonly referred to as the Building Commissioner or Building Inspector, was established by Ordinances which have become incorporated into the Galva City Code as Chapter 12 of Title 6 (“Zoning Administration and Enforcement”). The Building Commissioner/Inspector and six (6) board members are appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. The seventh (7th) member of the board is a designated seat for the Mayor, with the consent of the city council, as chairman of the Board.
The Zoning Board of Appeals reviews all applications and hears all requests for variations to the zoning restrictions and all appeals from administrative decisions based on an interpretation of the Zoning Ordinances (e.g., a decision made by an inspector or the city administrator). Additional information about the Zoning Board is on the Zoning page.
The Board does not hear petitions for zoning changes (e.g., a change from B2 to M1). Zoning changes amount to a permanent change in the way an area is zoned and how that area can be used in the future. Hence, zoning changes fall under the purview of the Plan Commission.
Attend A Meeting
Zoning Board meetings are open to the public and held at City Hall. Because the Zoning Board only meets when business comes before it, check with City Hall, watch the News & Announcements section on the Homepage of this website, and keep an eye out for announcements in the The Prairie News for the next scheduled meeting.
