The City Tree Board, also known as the Forestry Board, was created to advise on the planting, removal, maintenance, and protection of public trees and shrubs. Made up of two council members and the City Forester, the Board may review and recommend actions, though all decisions are subject to final approval by the City Council.

Public Trees and Shrubs

Public trees and shrubs adorn public ways within the corporate limits of the City of Galva and consist of the following broad categories:

Park Trees are trees, shrubs, bushes and all other woody vegetation in public parks having individual names and all other areas owned by the City or to which the public has free access as a park.

All trees or shrubs planted or to be planted on any park, playground or other property owned or controlled by the City or on any public street, alley, sidewalk or highway within the public right of way, but shall not include school sites.

Trees, shrubs, bushes and all other woody vegetation on land lying between property lines on either side of all streets, avenues or ways within the City.

Public Care of Trees and Shrubs

The City may plant, prune, maintain, or remove trees and shrubs in public areas as needed for safety or to preserve the appearance of public spaces. Hazardous or damaging trees may be removed from streets and alleys, and utility companies may clear vegetation around their lines.

The City may also require the removal of dead or diseased trees on private property if they pose a danger or risk spreading pests or disease. Property owners will be notified and must remove such trees within sixty (60) days or face removal by the City at the owner’s expense.

Private Care of Trees and Shrubs

Property owners must prune trees overhanging streets or sidewalks to maintain at least eight feet (8’) of clearance and ensure streetlights and intersections are not obstructed. They are also responsible for removing dead, diseased, or hazardous trees and limbs. The City may prune trees on private property if they block street lighting, traffic signs, or pedestrian pathways.
