Below you will find information, guidelines and regulations related to Brush/Yard Waste pick up and Burning.

The City of Galva provides free brush pick-up to its residents as time permits. Residents may contact city hall to let the city know they have brush on the curb, but this does not guarantee a timely pick-up. If residents wish to take their brush to the drop-off site, they may contact city hall for information on where to take it.

To have your brush picked up:

  • Ensure your brush pile does not exceed eight (8) feet in length
  • Neatly bundle your brush
  • Place it parallel to the curb so that it may be easily scooped or moved with a forklift.

Your brush may include parts of trimmed trees, but it cannot include entire trees that have been taken down by you or a commercial tree removal service. If you are having a tree taken down, make sure you or your contractor has provided for disposal of the tree.

The City of Galva provides a bi-monthly yard waste pick-up service to its residents on the first and third Mondays of the months of April through October (inclusive). The Street Department is responsible for the pick-up.

Yard Waste is specifically limited to vegetation, leaves, wood chips, grass clippings, garden waste such as weeds and stalks, and small branches and other tree or shrub parts small enough to fit into a yard waste bag.

To have your yard waste picked up:

  • Place yard waste in a bag that is biodegradable, up to fifty gallons in size, and when filled it must weigh less than fifty (50) pounds.
  • Place an official label on each bag. If not labeled it won’t be picked up. The labels must be purchased from City Hall for $2.00 each.
  • Place yard waste bags with labels attached on the curb no earlier than 5:00pm on the Sunday immediately prior to the pick up date, and no later than 7:00am on the pick up date.

If you need yard waste picked up in the months of November through March: Call City Hall to schedule a pick up date, then based on the scheduled pick up, bag and tag your waste, and set it out on the curb.

Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays only! Paper products, dry leaves and dry brush and tree trimmings may be burned in the residential areas from sunrise to five o’clock (5:00) p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

  • Burning any other materials than listed above is prohibited, unless a permit is granted by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). Contact the IEPA to learn more.
  • No person shall cause or allow open burning, except as provided herein or except in conformance with the rules of the Environmental Protection Agency
  • No person shall cause or allow the burning of any refuse in any chamber or apparatus unless such chamber or apparatus is designed for the purpose of disposing of the class of refuse being burned
  • It shall be unlawful to build or light any bonfire too close to any building or other structure as to endanger such building or structure or on any public street or sidewalk pavement
