community directory navigator...

You can access the community directory by clicking on the rolodex icon in the right sidebar or wherever you encounter it on the City's website.

what it contains...

The community directory contains contact information on Galva area businesses, clubs and organizations in a searchable database format. If your phone book is not handy and you need the number or website of one of our local businesses, you may find it in the database.

Specifically, the database lists:

  • the entity's name
  • address
  • phone number
  • website or other online resource when available
  • the entity's classification and subclassification

If a database field is blank, it means that we do not have the information needed to make an entry. For example, Tarleton's Service does not currently have a website, so one is not listed (the field is left blank).

how to search...

Following is a short tutorial on how to use the search features embedded in the community directory.

searching alphabetically...

To put a particular column in alphabetical order, click the column heading. For example, if you are looking for the business name "Tarleton's Service" clicking the "Business Name" heading once will arrange all entries in ascending alphabetical order (A - Z) allowing you to scroll down to the "Ts" to find "Tarleton's Service" (screen shot of what this might look like).

Alternately, you could click the "Business Name" heading again which will arrange all entries in descending alphabetical order (Z - A) which will allow you to limit your scrolling because "Tarleton's Service" would then appear closer to the top of the page (screen shot of what this might look like).

Another way to search alphabetically is to use the "Search for" drop down box. Continuing with our example, to find "Tarleton's Service", click the arrow in the drop down box and select "Business Name," then in the drop down box to the immediate right which, by default says "Contains" click the down arrow and select "Starts with...", then, in the text entry box to the immediate right type the letter "t" then click the "Search" button to the immediate right (see this screen shot).

Business names starting with the letter "T" will be displayed which can then be sorted using the "ascending" or "descending" approach outlined above (view screen shot).

keyword search...

You can search the database using "keywords" by searching for terms that can be found in the database's "fields." To search by keyword, use the "Search for" drop down box which contains all of the fields contained in the database (what you might recognize as the column headings).

Select the field that you wish to search in (for example, "Business Subclassification"), then your relational operator in the next box over, then enter your text string in the text entry box that you wish to find.

In this example, we choose the field "Business Subclassification" and we are going to look for all items in the Business Subclassification field that "Contains" the text string "Auto" (see initial screen shot then see the results screen shot).

refining your search using "advanced search"...

To refine your search even further, you can use the advanced search options available with the database by selecting "Advanced search" in the upper right hand corner (located here), which brings up the advanced search page with its attendant dialog boxes.

In this example, we are going to ask the database to return any results that contain fuel but not convenience store. To do so, we are going to place a check mark next to "Business Classification" under the NOT column, effectively asking the database to exclude any results that contain "Convenience Store."

Next, we are going to type the word "fuel" in the text entry box to the right of "Business Subclassification", thereby asking the database to return any results that contain the word "fuel".

Once we have made our selections, we push the search button to get our results (see the filled in page here and the results page here).

Note that in this example we have found one business that sells fuel that is not a convenience store.

printing your results...

The database includes two hyperlinked print options and one print button:

  1. Printer-friendly version
  2. Print all pages
  3. Print selected

See them here

1. The "Printer-friendly" option allows you to print what is on your screen.

By default, the database displays the first twenty (20) records, so if you click the "Printer-friendly" link, the first twenty (20) records displayed will be formatted for printing. To display a different amount, click the down arrow next to the "Records to display" box and select the amount of records from the drop-down list that you want to send to your screen (see example here).

In this example, we will ask the database to display up to twenty records with the text string "auto" in the "Business subclassification" field (see example). After we click the search button, our display screen looks like this (the search engine has returned three entries which are displayed on our screen).

Now we are ready to click the "Printer-friendly" link to format the entries for printing, which presents a screen that looks like this.

You can send your print-ready screen to your printer in the normal way.

2. The "Print all pages" option can be used if you wish to print all of the records in the database.

3. The "Print selected" button allows you to print only those listings that you have selected

To select one or more entries to print by using the "Print selected" button, place a check mark in the box next to the entry you wish to print then push the "Print selected" button.

If you place a check mark in the box to the left of the field "Business name", all boxes will be checked. You can selectively deselect any of the items that you do not want to print by clicking the check mark in the box next to any entries you wish to exclude.

In this example, we want to print the two entries on our screen that offer legal services, so we have placed a check mark next to the two law offices in town (see example), then we press the "Print selected" button to format the entries to print, then we send our list to the printer in the normal way.

.pdf view...

Anytime you select one of the print options, you are given the opportunity to view, save or print your selection using the Portable Document Format (you will need the Adobe Reader to view the file in the .pdf format which you can download for free by clicking this link and selecting the "Get Adobe Reader" icon.

Clicking the "PDF View" link in the upper left hand corner (find this link here) will begin the process of transforming your selection into the portable document format.

When you click the link, a progress bar will appear to give you an indication of how much time is remaining for the conversion process.

Once the conversion is completed, you can download the file to your computer as a .pdf by clicking on the download link.
