who we are

The Galva Ambulance Service was reconstituted as the Galva-Bishop Hill Emergency Medical Services (GBEMS) on 25 August, 2007. GBEMS is a registered, licensed, volunteer ambulance service operating under the licensing authority of the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).

our purpose...

The purpose of GBEMS is to provide basic life support and emergency medical care to the communities and residents within our service area. The level of care that we provide is specified by the IDPH, associated laws of the State of Illinois, and in accordance with the protocols established by our Resource Hospital.

our mission...

GBEMS will provide to our patients the highest standard of care possible. We strive to accomplish our mission by keeping our members apprised of the emergency medical technologies available within the level of care our organization provides.

our jurisdiction...

Our service area is commonly referred to as the GBEMS Service District. This district is delineated as part of our organization's licensing requirement and consists of a Primary Response Area, a Secondary Response Area and an Outlying Response Area encompassing approximately 102 square miles which can be viewed on our Service Area Map. In addition to our service area, GBEMS has signed mutual aid agreements with several area ambulance services (those services are identified in the left news panel under "mutual aid partners").

our mutual aid partners...

Because there are occasions (e.g., disasters such as tornadoes, multiple vehicle collisions , apartment fires, etc.) when ambulance services need additional help providing adequate emergency medical services to the people residing within their areas, GBEMS has signed agreements with area ambulance services to respond to calls for assistance. Likewise, should an incident occur within the GBEMS service area that requires additional ambulances and EMTs, those services have agreed to assist us with their first available ambulance and additional emergency medical technicians. In addition, we have signed agreements with several area fire departments to provide additional manpower and extrication equipment when needed.

our volunteers...

Our members give many reasons for wanting to serve their community. Some want to "give back" or "pay it forward." Others want to serve those that once served them. Some of our volunteers are continuing a tradition started by their parents or grandparents. Still others want to become competent enough to save the life of a friend, neighbor or relative if ever the need should arise. If you want to volunteer, and if you meet the minimum requirements for a First Responder's position or and Emergency Medical Technician, rest assured GBEMS will welcome your participation.

Below, you will find a short job description an the minimum requirements necessary for you to add your name to those who have found great satisfaction in serving their community as a member or our organization.

serving your community as a First Responder...

As a First Responder, you will calmly respond to emergency situations with compassion and professional reserve. Your primary responsibility will be to drive one of our ambulances in a safe and secure manner, in all kinds of weather, to the site of the call and if necessary to a nearby hospital. On occasion, you will be called upon to transport EMTs and their patients to a clearing for further transport aboard a life flight helicopter. In certain traumatic situations, GBEMS will call for an intercept that will take your patient to his destination under the care of licensed paramedics.

Many of our First Responders have responded to calls from relatives, friends and neighbors.

Because your primary responsibility will be driving, you must become familiar with and understand how to get to locations and addresses within our service area.

You will gain great familiarity with the various pieces of equipment that our ambulances carry and will be able to dispense that equipment to the EMT in charge.

Stabilizing and loading patients will involve a lot of lifting, bending and twisting, for which you must be physically capable. The medical training you receive will. at times, be demanded and put to use on scene and in the ambulance when a patient is loaded.

Understand that as a GBEMS volunteer, you will be called upon to see people at the worse possible moment in their lives. Your reward is knowing that you were there to help them overcome that moment.

To become a First Responder you must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age
  • Have a valid Illinois driver's license
  • Have no felony convictions
  • Have no misdemeanor convictions for a crime of moral turpitude
  • Demonstrate that you can meet the mental and physical requirements of the position
  • Successfully complete the Health Care Providers CPR course
  • Successfully complete the approved First Responder Course and pass the written exam

GBEMS will pay all of your classroom fees, provide you with all necessary training manuals and will absorb all requisite licensing fees. All on the job training (OJT) will be provided at no cost to you. The Service will provide all of the equipment that you will need to serve.

To apply, download an application or call the Director of GBEMS at (309) 932 - 2120. The application is a large file that may take several minutes to download, depending on the speed of your Internet connection. You must have the free adobe reader to view and print the application.

serving your community as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)...

As a GBEMS EMT, you will respond to calls for help from those that just need a hand because they have fallen to those that have been seriously injured. You will answer these calls with the professionalism and composure that comes with being a skilled and competent technician.

Your oral and written communication skills will be on display as you converse with the patient, the receiving hospital, your partner, doctors, nurses and family members; and as you document everything pertinent to the call as required by the hospital.

Your listening skills will be tested as you interpret and implement orders and instructions from medical control, and your training will guide you as you execute the protocols of our Resource Hospital.

Besides helping your fellow EMT or First Responder with the lifting, bending an twisting required to stabilize and load your patient, you will be responsible for administering medications by injection or oral means. You will maintain your patient's oral and nasal airways; you will find that your actions have saved a life or prevented further deterioration or debilitation of your patient.

To become an EMT-B with GBEMS, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age
  • Have a valid Illinois driver's license
  • Have no felony convictions
  • Have no misdemeanor convictions for a crime of moral turpitude
  • Demonstrate that you can meet the mental and physical requirements of the position
  • Successfully complete the Health Care Providers CPR course
  • Successfully complete the approved EMT-B course and pass the written exam

GBEMS will pay all of your classroom fees, provide you with all necessary training manuals and will absorb all requisite licensing fees. All on the job training (OJT) will be provided at no cost to you. The Service will provide all of the equipment that you will need to serve.
